"The truly inconsistent people are those who believe themselves to have discovered the merits of protectionism only since Trump has gotten political power."

"By the nature of the matter I cannot prove that what I’m about to write is true, but I’m quite confident that it’s true – namely, that if Hillary Clinton were today president and were saying and doing about trade the exact same things that Trump is saying and doing about trade, many of the people who are now cheering Trump’s trade policy and hailing him as a genius conquering hero on the trade front would be spitting vitriol and venom at Pres. H. Clinton. Many of the people who today contort their brains and play fast and loose with their integrity in order to justify Trump’s asinine, unethical, harmful, and cronyist trade interventions would, had H. Clinton won the 2016 election, today be quoting Adam Smith, Milton Friedman, Ronald Reagan – and perhaps even me – on the virtues of free trade in their attempts to discredit Clinton’s protectionism."

On the bright side, maybe this whole thing will get the sheeple on the left watching some Friedman videos on YouTube. I’d suggest they read some Hayek or Mises, but I’m not sure they’d have the intellectual capacity to understand it.

If Clinton was president, she wouldn't do most of these things. But let's say she did. I wouldn't change my view nor comments. I would express surprise and gratitude if she lowered taxes. I would praise her for the economic boom that resulted. If she enacted tariffs....I would say the same as Trump....bad idea. But here's the difference: I wouldn't be able to say "she is a negotiator. She is bringing them to the table, and it's probably temporary" because she never called herself a great negotiator. But I always said tariffs are a bad idea. I always said I hope this is just a tool and he really doesn't mean it. Protectionism is bad. Also I've learned that Canada and Europe already had tariffs on our exports to them. WTF? So NAFTA didn't include those things? If we want free trade, let's make it really free. I don't change my view depending on who did or said something.

the tariffs are necessary to protect the economy of the nation's...for example Africa is forced to open there market's for european chicken imports , this ruins the domestic farmers/Industries !

I think Trump is just playing hardball like any businessman would. He is threatening and using tariffs to force other countries to abandon theirs. I’ll bet he’ll end tariffs once he gets them to comply with what he wants them to do. I personally don’t like tariffs and oppose them. They are no more than another tax that consumers end up paying in the long run. I’m not happy about Trump’s use of tariffs, but I hope I’m right about him simply leveraging them as a tool.

Farmer Jeff, in the system we live are tariffs part of the game ! THAT'S FACT.. whatever your personal believing is 🎓

Awakened, you’re obviously not very ‘awakened’ if you feel tariffs are necessary. I suggest you go read some some stuff from Hayek, Misses, or Rothbard regarding tariffs. They certainly awakened my thinking regarding the evils of tariffs.

Farmer Jeff, maybe I have a more complex opinion about what's happen ..tariffs are a minor detail . Btw. the different economic theories and Ideologies gehen mir am Arsch vorbei, sorry !

Farmer Jeff, I think you're right. Anyone who studies economics knows that tariffs hurt everyone in the long run. But in the short run it will have little effect. I hope he is just playing hard ball to get new and better trade agreements.
