Nick Kontogouris, actually yes. The old testament law was "fullfilled" and, largely, is not needed to be practiced anymore.
But hey, here's some more context: Israel is "God's covenant people" which means they're under a form of contract with God to live a certain way. Stoning those who commit adultery refers only to those who have entered into contractual obligation not to; a "stranger" traveling with Israel would have very different rules. They would still be expected to live a certain standard if sanitation/decency, but it wouldn't be as strict.
Nick Kontogouris, according to the majority of Christian/protestant, no. Bunches don't even use the OT in their sermons.
I personally am LDS, with different and much more complex beliefs about the old testament.
For the sake of things, I'll give you a blanket heuristic: external performances given in the Old testament are not used (don't eat pork), moral principles (chastity, honesty, etc.) are. Ways of enforcing the principles (stoning, etc.) are not.
bobdaduck, Americans do have a very specific saying for that kind of thing... Its Cherry Picking and if you do it then i will do it too and things be a mess. It's plain ridiculous. But since we're at Genesis explain me something. If eve came from Adam why she has different chromosome?
Nick Kontogouris, it isn't cherry picking. Everyone even vaguely familiar with Judaism knows that there are huge differences between the law (Torah) and the rules (Talmud). The old testament had very specifc laws of sanitation, and very specific laws of morality. There was another division too, which I don't remember. But it really is not strange to say "the legal and sanitary laws were done away, and thr moral laws remain."
Did you seriously just ask "if Eve came from Adam why she has different chromosome"? Do you think Eve's advent was some sort of test tube petri dish affair? Please explain your views using scripture.
Nick Kontogouris, "doing good" or "goodness" is a concept which implies a God. Only a careless person who hasn't thought about it fully would try to say otherwise. With no God, there's no such concept or reason for good. Simple as that. Atheists just fudge the heck out of it and prove nothing to say otherwise.
Nick Kontogouris, no problem. Its just you are telling me what I and others believe, when its fairly clear you've never actually studied the subject. It would be like me saying "everyone from greece (you're in greece) does Zeus worshipping rituals" and then insiting upon it when you dispute me.
Nick Kontogouris, no, you are wrong and it's because you haven't taken the time to think this through. You must be applying some vague idea which seems to fit. The concept of good can only exist because of a God. Without a God, there is no reason for it.
Nick Kontogouris, this is to say, relative morality, no matter its utilitarian purposes, still dissolves a lot of boundaries we think of naturally. You can argue "good" comes from either yourself, culture, or authority, but nobody would say that murdering kids in the name of any of those things is "good". Remember, C.S. Lewis was an Atheist until he realized he had a conscience and could not explain where it came from.
bobdaduck, it is relative almost! Humans must value and protect life, that's the basis of a universal rule.
If we disagree on that then there's no common ground to talk.
But if we do agree then we can take it from there.
bobdaduck, on basis that human's life is/must be protected above all.
Of course if you ask a cow probably she will disagree.
At first i must value my life above all so be able to protect anyone else.
Still i can sacrifice myself if i judge that will worth the sacrifice.
Nick Kontogouris, I agree that people have some property. As in, we don't have rights to all or no property. For example, we have a right to our bodies. My concept for morality is based out of this concept of property rights. But it's a bit random in a discussion about good. Also, what the heck is universal rule?
Jason, Universal rule.... Well i was thinking something that is acceptable by all but my English sucks (not my mother language)
Back in track, so protecting life, specifically human's life is something not related to any God. Right?
Helping you in harsh times must be done no matter...
your skin color.
how much rich or poor you are.
to what God you believe at
(and the list goes on) ... Right?
