For a short season, edible pod pea that can also be used for canning, Alaska peas can be a good choice. We plan on trying several varieties of peas this year to see which does best for us down here, and the Alaska peas were the first ones to get planted. Since they can grow to about 2.5 or 3 feet in height, I did provide some support. If all goes according to plan, we should be able to start harvesting by mid-April.
Anis de Flavigny candies start with a single, tiny anise seed. Plunged into sugar syrup over and over for a period of 15 days, the seed becomes enveloped in a white shell. The final product looks like a smooth pearl, with sweet layers in flavors such as rose and blackcurrant (courtesy of natural extracts) surrounding its licorice-y center.
