I knew Kubrick made a mess of "The Shining", but finally reading "A Clockwork Orange" made me realise how the film did not really touch the points Burgess wanted to put across. It was more than just ultra-violence and rehabilitation. He foresaw a careless, abusive society, but also the frailty of human emotions and the contradictive nature of a nanny state. The book it is also written in a teen language completely invented, called #nadsat, and it is enjoyable to read in English. Simple story Burgess did not make much of but was turned in a global cinematographic phenomenon (which he did not like!). Must read!
