It's a common misconception that Bavarians wear feathers on their hats. Men in southern Bavaria wear a „Gamsbart“.
Despite of being called Gamsbart („chamois‘ beard“) the hair is collected from the spinal fur of the animal. Chamois is a common prey.
Last weekend the Gamsbart Olympics took place in the small village of Mittenwald. This photo shows some participants with their treasures.
Gamsbarts are a quite expensive accessorie. They are handmade, cost up to 4000 Euro and consist of about 40,000 hairs each.
The hat is very important for Bavarian traditional costumes. The men don’t even take it of in taverns, just in church and at home they do.
